The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

I caught The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug during my long Christmas break.   To be honest, watching The Hobbit in parts has sort of diminished my enjoyment of watching motion picture in the big wide screen.   Let's face it.  We have watched LOTR in 3 parts and The Hobbit in 2 installations.  I find myself no longer thrilled by the magnificent landscape, the special effects and fantasy, simply because I expected them.

Nevertheless, the movie is still enjoyable as you follow the journey of Bilbo and the dwarves to Lonely Mountain to reclaim the Arkenstone and come face-to-face with Smaug. I vaguely recalled an interesting conversation and riddles between Bilbo and Smaug and for the life of me, I really don't remember a Wood Elf and Dwarf falling in love.   Hmm... I guess I better read the book once more before watching the 3rd installment of this movie.

Rating:  5 out of 5 fairy clouds.   The story is definitely more lively in than book than the screen.   I suspect a number of parts were taken out in order to create the grand image of middle earth.  Those nuggets are the things which make you fall in love with Bilbo Baggins, the Hobbit from the Shire.   Still, it is fun to escape from reality, flying into the world of the made-believe and magic.

Frozen Flower

Frozen Flower is indeed a controversial movie, to say the least.   Think Brokeback Mountain.

The story goes like this. The gay King orders his lover boy, Hong Rim, leader of a military made up of young men, to impregnate his Queen, a Mongolian Princess. While the official procreation mission is successful, the Queen and Hong Rim fall deeply in love with each other.

The lustful and jealous King attempts to keep them apart by sending his lover away.   Unfortunately, he finds them together on the night before Hong Rim's departure.  In rage, he orders Hong Rim to be castrated and thrown into prison. Hong Rim escapes and lives a fugitive life.  However, on seeing a beheaded female head displayed on the spike, wearing the Queen's necklace, he thought that King has killed the Queen.  As such, he goes back to the Palace to seek revenge.

The movie reminded me of Golden Flower.  Similarly, it is filled with pretty boys, beautiful scenery and props, overly avant-garde and gaudy traditional costumes to hide a mediocre plot.   In short, a lot of bangs but no substance.   Disappointing movie.

Rating: 3 out of 5 fairy clouds.  The movie is a stark contrast to the romantic comedy movies which you generally find.  Frozen Flower is a little serious and dark.   It is over rated and the sexual scene failed to add value to the movie in any way, nor build up the emotional bond between two individuals.  Perhaps the director equated physical lust as fulfilling romance.

Phantom of the Opera @ Grand Theatre (MBS)

The musical, Phantom of the Opera, is extremely enthralling for the un-initiated fans.   There are a couple of things which make this performance far more spectacular than others.

1.  Props
The garish prop designs from costumes to backdrops and enhancing prop displays totally ensnare you into each of the scene.  Some of the memorable ones include the infamous chandelier, the boat scene, the masquerade party and so froth.

2.  Stagework
Many a times, you will that one scene leads to the next in a seamless style much like watching a movie.   The dance work and choreography matching the sang chorus.   If you use a little imaginative, you can almost see the actual scene as depicted by Gaston Leroux, from the moment the chandelier rises, to the Phantom leading Christine down his catacomb dwelling, dramatic drop of the chandelier and a little pyrotechnic.

3.  Music
Apart of hitting all the high notes which many ordinary folks should (seriously) never attempt, you can't help but noticed the depth when sound system is used effectively to give you the surround sound effect that O.G. (Opera Ghost) is present everywhere in the theatre.   The surreal feeling that you are like Christine, being caught in the palm of this Angel.

4.  Story
Whoever resisted a pathetic love story and unfulfilled emotions?   Many great literature survive on the primitive human desires - to be loved and to be accepted.  It is almost impossible to not feel for the Phantom, be it sympathy, love, sadness or anger.

Watching the Phantom for the 4th time on stage (more if you count the movie), is strangely a different experience.   I'm no longer excited by the magical sparks of the performance, but the in-depth portrayal of the characters by the different cast members. No doubt the cast is good and it is probably unfair to compete against my memory of the 1993 and 2007 performances.

1993 - Kallang Theatre offered the best in terms of the big stage.  The chandelier drop was a lot more magnificent.  So was the pyrotechnic used back then.  I was in awe by the songs and the well-choreographed ballet dancers... the uniformity was impeccable.

2007 - The closeness of the box seats at the Esplanade had allowed the cast to put in real actors there to give eminent traces of an opera house performance.  I vaguely recalled the Phantom running through the side door.   The Pyrotechnic used was too good.

2013 - The 'new-ness' of Grand Theatre gives it a competitive edge in terms of sound system.   However, the stage is too small and "shallow" for the Phantom act.   In fact, too small for a Les Miserable act too.  Many of the special effects from the pyrotechnic to lighting effects were not well executed.

So, here's my proper review on the 2013 Phantom.

The prop and set designs are excellent as expected.  So, no complain there.   But the ballet girls were really a lamentable mess.   They were hardly synchronized in their movement, except in the opening act.

The leading and supporting actors brought out their characters well, especially for Monsieur Firmin and André who were previously downplayed.   Well done in bringing out the liveliness of the opera managers.  Carlotta seemed meek as opposed to the prima donna whom she was supposed to be, and lacking in her little Italiano flair.   Piangi was also meek, especially when he is usually very supportive of Carlotta's diva acts.   Meg Giry's singing was a little more forceful than expected as she was always portrayed as this sweet gentle little girl.

Claire Lyon as Christine Daaé delivered well on her singing but superficial on the emotions.   You can sense her hate and anger for the Phantom in deceiving her, but there was no hint of that "in awe", fear and regret that she felt towards the Phantom as the story progressed.  I was a little disappointed.

Raoul is an easy character to play; young and full of love for Christine.   While Anthony Downing did everything right to pursue Christine, he lacked the grandiosity of a viscount and acted more like a garçon in love, yes puppy love.   Oh ya, the kissing scene was too strong and much too like a Hollywood style movie.   Subtly, oh where is the subtly?

Brad Little, as the Phantom was too boisterous this time as compared to his 2007 act.   I can't detect that gentleness, sensitivity, despair and needy elements which are supposed to be evident in his character.  The swing from dejection to anger was hard to detect.  To me, the Phantom is a dark genius, not a shallow person.  He is willful and yet sensitive, as such greatly tormented by his own emotional turmoil.

Overall the performance was still good with a slight disappointment due to the missing nuances of some characters.  My 2007 review can be viewed here, http://mabelchan.blogspot.sg/2007/05/phantom-of-opera-esplanade-theatre.html.

Music of the Night ♫
Night time sharpens
Heightens each sensation
Darkness stirs and wakes imagination
Silently the senses
Abandon their defenses

Slowly, gently
Night unfurls it's splendor
Grasp it, sense it
Tremulous and tender
Turn your face away
From the garish light of day.
Turn your thoughts away
From cold, unfeeling light,
And listen to the music of the night.

Close your eyes
And surrender to your darkest dreams.
Purge your thoughts of the life you knew before.
Close your eyes,
Let your your spirit start to soar.
And you'll live as you've never lived before.

Softly, deftly
Music shall caress you
Hear it, feel it
Secretly possess you
Open up your mind
Let your fantasies unwind
In this darkness that you know you cannot fight
The darkness of the music of the night

Let your mind
Start a journey through a strange new world
Leave all thoughts of the life you knew before
Let your soul take you where you long to be.
Only then can you belong to me

Floating, falling
Sweet intoxication
Touch me, trust me
Savor each sensation
Let the dream begin
Let your darker side give in
To the power of the music that I write
The power of the music of the night

You alone can make my song take flight
Help me make the music of the night

Turbo

A little garden snail that firmly believes "No dream is too big, and no dreamer too small." And with that goal in mind, Theo races his heart out at the Indianapolis 500.

Turbo is predictable and kind of resemble a miniature version of fast and furious, except that it happens on a snail, the least probable creature to be associated with the word "fast".   Regardless, it is a cute entertaining animation for kids.

Rating:  3 out of 5 fairy clouds.   Not my cup of tea but what the heck anyways.  There are a couple of cool moves that make the snails kick butts, but that's it.

Lone Ranger

"Hi-ho Silver! Away!" is the infamous line of John Reid, the Lone Ranger, who is always accompanied by his side kick and trusted Comanche friend, Tonto.  Oh wait!  And the theme song from William Tell Overture!  The good old cowboy... YEEHAA!!!

The modern rendition of the Lone Ranger is portrayed by Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp and there are endless moments of intriguing and yet funny dialogues between the two leads.   Never a dull moment through the movie.

It starts with the little young boy who idolizes the Lone Ranger, meets a native American mannequin that shares his story with his "Ke-mo sah-bee" (original translation is trusty scout and 'wrong brother' in this 2013 film).

Reid returns home to Colby Texas, only to encounter a brutal and cannibalistic outlaw, Butch Cavendish.  While pursuing the outlaw, all the rangers are ambushed and killed except Reid.   Tonto rescues Reid and calls him  the"Spirit Walker", i.e. one who cannot be killed in battle.   Together, the duo embarks on a journey to bring justice by hunting down Cavendish and his men, and then continues to fight the bad boys in the Old West.

I like to share a couple of the quotes that tickled me.

[When Silver appears on the barn roof to save Reid and Tonto]
John Reid:  The horse can fly?
Tonto:  Don't be stupid.
----------------------
Tonto:  Nice Shot.
John Reid:  That was supposed to be a warning shot.
Tonto:  In that case, not so good.
----------------------
[When Silver appears on a tree branch]
Tonto:  Something very wrong with that horse.
----------------------
John Reid:  Hi-ho Silver, away!
Tonto:  Never do that again.

Rating:  4.5 out of 5 fairy clouds.   A funny movie that got me laughing non-stop.  While the movie is generally predictable, there are still a couple of interesting twists.  An enjoyable movie that makes you feel in awe of the cool cowboy rangers.

Despicable Me 2

Despicable Me 2 is oozing with cuteness as the minions continue to be despicably silly.

When the secret laboratory in the Arctic Circle mysteriously disappears, the Anti-Villain League (AVL) has no other choice but to recruit Gru for their new mission.   Pairing of Lucy Wilde, the new AVL agent and Gru spark new chemistry between the duo.  The undercover work led Gru to a super villain El Macho and discovery of the plot behind the deadly mutant chemical, PX-41.

Like all wholesome family entertainment, Gru, Lucy, the girls and minions save the world from hostile takeover by El Macho, thereby ending the story beautifully with an 'ahem' expected wedding.

The first movie definitely performs much better than the sequel.  This is partly because viewers form expectation of what Gru, the girls and the bubbly cute popping yellow capsules, I meant minions, are likely to do and behave.  Overall, it is still a fun and lighthearted movie to cheer you up.

Rating:  4 out of 5 fairy clouds.  For the unexpected rendition of "I Swear" and "YMCA" by the minions, I gave this animated movie an additional 1/2 cloud.

Brokeback Moutain

It took me 8 years before I have a chance to watch Brokeback Mountain.   Not that it was censored or blocked, but I didn't have the time to find this movie.

The story of Brokeback Mountain is simply one of forbidden love and pressure of society against same sex relationship.   It has taken Ennis de Mar 20 years to acknowledge his undying love for Jack Twist.   He finally realizes how precious Jack has been to him and it is a love which he cannot replace.  It is a difficult feat for a man who does not handle emotions well as he has been brought up to be all manly and not mushy.

The movie is amazing.  The story is well-told and beautiful.   You feel for both the lovers and also the people around them.   Coupled with the good acting by the two male lead actors, I can only say superb.

Rating:  5 out of 5 fairy clouds.   No one should miss this excellent movie.   Go watch it if you have not, unless you are a homoprobe, then please stay away.
