Broadway Beng! 3

This evening, I went to a musical, Broadway Beng! 3 at the Drama Centre, inside National Library. The main lead, Mr Ah Beng is none other than Sebastian Tan.

A lot of the jokes, songs, humorous slap-sticks are mostly in the universal language of the Bengz, Hokkien. Being a Cantonese Pedigree, I can only understand like 90% of the play. It would have been better if subtitles are provided for the hokkien jokes and dialogues.

Sebastian Tan is rather good at engaging the audience and getting them to dive into his musical performance. I applaud him for his stage effort. On the matters of the his CB (Chio Bu), though very tongue-in-cheek funny, it is a degrading Beng's joke. It can only be funny if you take it with a pinch of salt. As a feminist, I'm having a little bit of a hard time dealing with any derogative behaviours and words towards female. Then again, that's just me.

Overall, the musical wasn't as entertaining as I imagine it to be. There are a couple of interesting jokes about Mas Selamat, Maria (the Original Maid) in the Sound of Music, her Chio Bu (in She works hard for her money) and more. This musical is very much palatable to the Singapore local audience.

Personally, I do not think I will be going to another Beng's production. I do enjoy what Selena Tan has produced so far and her productions in Dream Academy. But Broadway Beng just isn't my cup of tea tonight. I can't help feeling a slight disappointment when I'm expected a good laugh.

Dan in Real Life

The movie told of the life of Dan Burns. Widower with 3 lovely daughters. A hardworking father who worked very hard to provide for his girls. During one fateful annual family gather, he met a beautiful lady in the town's bookshop. Falling in love with her, without realising she is his brother's new girlfriend.

The story is a little slow. Though the director tried to work in some subtle attraction and emotional issues for both the lead actor and actress, there is still the seemingly lack of chemistry between them both. I love Juliette Binoche and have watched a couple of her movies. But i have to say, she is rather bland in this movie.

This is one of those movies you can watch if you really have nothing else to do that day. I have to say Steve Carell is much more interesting in the movie "The 40 Years Old Virgin". I believe he has been rather stereotype by his acting skill. Wholesome and all goodie goodie angel storyline can at times make it boring.

Rating: 2 out of 5 fairy clouds.

Taxidermia

Taxidermia is one extremely unique Hungarian film. It has gory details of twisted human while at the same time it is beautifully film like an art!

The movie showcases 3 generations of different men. Starting with a soldier from World War II who is capable of shooting fire with his (ahem) penis to a glutton, love story of speed glutton and finally a man who loves embalming to death and quite in the literal sense too. Loosely inter-linking all 3 men - grandfather, father and son.

This greatly grotesque movie is shrewdly made, showing the strangely talented, creative and yet dark and twisted cinema techniques. I guess we all live in a rather dysfunctional society. If we choose to be selfish, self-absorb and living without boundary, I do wonder how many of us will end up like these 3 men in the movie. Deviant and yet alluring at the same time. Can this truly be our real form as human. I really hope not.

This Gyorgy Palfi film is worth watching. But it isn't for the faint heart. It is mind blowing till the very end of the show.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 fairy clouds for the excellent cinematography and style which not many people can achieve without making it a totally turn off movie.

Doomsday is DOOM

I thought that Doomsday might be an interesting action packed movie for the weekend. Some guys might love the action and the overly gloried bloody scene. Personally I find the action a little too much of a child's play and in your face. But the lead actress has a cute ass.

As the Reaper Virus started to spread, the wall was locked and sealed, forever closing Scotland with a 30 feet tall wall. Three decades later, satellite information revealed survivals in the Glasgow. Major Sinclair (Rhona Mitra) of the Department of Domestic Security (DDS) was assigned to enter the desolated land.

The excursion is not without reason as the Reaper Virus has somehow started to spread in London. The DDS is faced with the urgency to deal with such an emergency crisis while at the same time deliver a cure. And henceforth Major Sinclair was tasked to locate Dr Kane who was left inside Glasgow or whatever cure he might have created. Everything revolves around politics and manipulation.

Several closed calls and deadly encounter inside "no man's land" for the Major and her team. And at the end of the day, she saved the day by delivering a survival (natural selection of the fittest survives) and a doctor, who will eventually deliver a cure to London (I hope and way too coincidental that they both the only survivals from the team). Anyways, this is how the story went and ended with Sinclair making peace with her past and creating new havoc inside Glasgow.

Rating: 2 out of 5 fairly (oops! I mean fairy) clouds. Watch only when you have nothing else to do. Or when you need to find an excuse to grab your date. So guys, this is a great opportunity to act macho for once.

Dayang 13-16 April 2008

Went on another trip to Dayang. I have to admit it was very fun and wonderful. Visibility was good on more of our dive stops at Captain Point, Rayner's Rock and Pinang. The crowd was great too. Peace brother, woohoo!

As with the other dives, I see a lot of fishes like nemo, moray eel, bumphead, batfish, blue puffer fish, white puffer fish, sea turtle, nudibranch, sea slugs, etc. The most amazing sightings of this trip were
1) White spotted moray eel
2) Porcupine puffer fish
3) Trigger fish
4) red color sea slug (I do not know the name)
5) sea turtle mating
6) Baby lobster
7) DOLPHINS!!!!

The baby lobster is so cute and adorable. Though I wanted to play with it. I decided not to harass it after tagging at its feelers for a short while. And oh my god! Dolphins! We saw 3 dolphins following playfully behind a fishing boat. They are such beautiful and amazingly smart creatures. I look forward to swimming with dolphins. It would be nice to sight them in during my dive, if it is possible.

I finally did my night dive this year. It was kind of interesting as we see different marine lives at night. But at some point, I did get a little uncomfortable and scared. But seeing people around me, my dive buddy next to me and many lights do kind of offered some comfort. So I just continued to fin as per normal and completed my 1hr night dive training.

I am also very proud of myself as I have gained more experience in maintaining my buoyancy. It was really cool. I love being underwater so far. I got to use a dive com this trip. And I learnt how important it is to have one. I look forward to getting my basic gear and dive com this year.

Yo peace brother! I look forward to another wonderful diving trip with my rowdy and fun diving buddies again. Peace. Woohoo!

Chilling @ Dempsey

I got my wish today. I went to chill @ Dempsey! Woohoo!

I had a wonderful dinner, Beetroot Pasta with Sun dried Tomato in Veal Sauce and a Upside Down Ginger Surprise. Very yummy and delicious. After dinner, my gal friend and I chilled out and made a spontaneous decision to head for the spa.

We both took the 90min massage. I have the Slow Flow Massage which is wax oil massage using Hawaiian technique. I feel wonderful and pampered tonight. I will make a point to go there for another massage. The experience and relaxation is worth the value.

Ladies Nite, Boggie Nite... Oh What a Nite!

I have a FANTASTIC day!!!!!

Started with a lunch celebration for a good friend of mine at work. We went to BlooiE for some wonderful Tex-Mex cuisine. And after work I met up with a couple of ex-colleagues at the Grand Mercure Roxy Hotel. We headed to Chevy 57 at Katong for some drinks and dance.

It has been a while since I'm out partying. I got to say, I do kind of miss such days when I get to hang out with friends to just drink and dance. I would still do it again, but I guess I prefer to chill more lately. Perhaps age is catching up with me. Perhaps I just didn't have enough sleep.

Either way, it was a wonderful evening. I love the company of close friends. And most importantly, I really love my single lifestyle very much. Girls, thank you for being so fabulous!
